This sculpture was created in 1979 and donated to the City of New York in 1991 in Honor of Edward I. Koch, Mayor. The sculptor was born in Poland and spent the first part of his life struggling to escape the conflicts of Poland and Russia and the attacks by the Cossacks. He moved around eastern Europe until 1921 when he got a passport for America. Gross spent most of his career working with wood until the 1950's when he began to sculpt in bronze. He was heavily influenced by Marc Chagall and mostly sculpted figures of dancers and circus acrobats. There is a museum in Greenwich Village dedicated to the artist and his work.
